Jim is also Distinguished Professor of Life Sciences at the University of Surrey. He has covered a wide range of environmental and health areas at the political, economic, social and environmental levels. He specialises in monitoring, reporting and verification of deforestation and forest degradation, especially as it affects global sustainability.

Previously he held titles which included Head of Microbiology and Crop Protection at Horticulture Research International, Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission Research Agency, Director of Forestry at DMC International Imaging at Surrey Satellite Technology, Senior Advisor to the South East England Development Agency, Coordinator for Agricultural and Forest Sustainability at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, and Board Member of the European Forest Institute. He won the UNESCO Carlos J. Finlay Prize and Einstein Medal.
