Understanding the smelting market

Having access to accurate, reliable and timely data on metals smelting activity across the globe is an important challenge that stakeholders in the supply chain are facing today. Historically, data has been collected from a variety of sources including announcements by smelter operators and anecdotal information, none of which are 100% reliable and actionable.

Due to the large number of smelters, local and country restrictions, and commercial operator secrecy, obtaining this data is very difficult and the data itself can be unreliable and inconsistent. The time taken to collect the data also affects its reliability and accuracy, meaning that it is often out of date.

Using data fusion to deliver insights

Data is collected and analysed using advanced algorithms derived from Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques. Data is taken from several different Earth Observation satellites and our global and regional indices are updated daily to give consistent, insightful and dependable results.

Two types of indices are provided: one to show smelter activity levels and one to detect periods of shutdown or inactivity. The data can be broken down to offer more granular detail, including information on the activity of individual smelters.

SAVANT also offers detailed smelter history going back several years, allowing a comparison between empirical data and public announcements relating to smelter shutdown periods.
