Our Earth Observation (EO) Training Programme is designed to equip defence personnel with the knowledge, skills, and operational understanding required to exploit EO data for mission-critical applications. Delivered by subject matter experts with deep experience in civilian satellite operators, defence and space, the programme blends theoretical foundations with hands-on training to build sovereign capability in EO exploitation, analysis, and operational integration.
Programme Objectives
We aim to develop EO literacy by building foundational understanding of EO principles, sensors, and data types. Analytical proficiency is enhanced by training personnel in EO data processing, interpretation, and fusion with other intelligence sources.
Operational Integration is supported, enabling the effective use of EO in defence planning, situational awareness, and decision-making. Sovereign capability is fostered through reduce reliance on external providers by developing in-house EO expertise.
Core Modules
EO Fundamentals
- Principles of space, satellites, remote sensing and EO
- Overview of EO platforms (LEO, GEO, HAPS, UAVs)
- Sensor types: optical, SAR, hyperspectral, thermal
- EO data formats, resolution, and limitations
EO Data Processing and Tools
- Pre-processing techniques (radiometric, geometric corrections)
- Image classification and change detection
- Introduction to EO software (e.g., QGIS, SNAP, ENVI)
- Automation and scripting for EO workflows (e.g., Python, GDAL)
Defence Applications of EO
- Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR)
- Maritime domain awareness and border monitoring
- Target detection and activity tracking
- Environmental monitoring and disaster response
Operational Integration
- EO in the intelligence cycle and decision-making
- Tasking, collection, processing, exploitation, and dissemination (TCPED)
- Fusion with other data sources (e.g., SIGINT, HUMINT)
- Case studies and mission simulations
Advanced Topics (Optional)
- AI/ML for EO data exploitation
- Near-real-time EO processing
- EO for space domain awareness (SDA)
- EO policy, ethics, and legal considerations
Delivery Format
- Modular and Scalable: Customisable to different roles, experience levels, and mission needs.
- Blended Learning: Combination of classroom instruction, virtual modules, and practical labs.
- Scenario-Based Training: Real-world defence scenarios to reinforce learning outcomes.
- Embedded Mentoring: On-the-job support and coaching during live operations or exercises.
Target Audiences
A wide range of audiences can benefit from our EO training programme from intelligence analysts and geospatial specialists to operational planners and mission commanders. Space programme teams and EO system operators to will see value as would defence policy and capability development staff.
Benefits to Defence Clients
Defence client will see mission-ready personnel; trained teams capable of exploiting EO for operational advantage. Enhanced situational awareness will be evident through improved ability to monitor, assess, and respond to global events.
Sovereign capability will grow through reduced dependency on commercial or allied EO services. And alignment with NATO and allied EO standards and practices will mean greater interoperability.
Security and Compliance
All training is delivered in compliance with relevant security protocols. Courses can be tailored for classified environments and delivered by security-cleared instructors.
